Matvey Kulakov is an award-winning editor, composer, and sound designer. Our New President, Matvey’s first feature as editor, premiered at Sundance in 2018, where it won a Special Jury Award for Editing. The short version of the film was released by Field of Vision in 2017 and was a Vimeo Staff Pick.
Working as a sound designer and composer, Matvey collaborated with the art collective Pussy Riot on multiple live performances and installations. As a member of Third Party Films, a NY-based film production company, Matvey has worked on several feature documentaries, including The Truth About Killer Robots (2018 - HBOMax / TIFF premiere), about the perils of automation; The Conspiracy (2022) (DTLA Film Festival 2023 - Best Editing), an animated feature about the history of conspiracy theories and antisemitism, starring Liev Schreiber, Jason Alexander, and Lake Bell; and How to Rob Banks for Dummies (post-production - 2025), about performance artist Joe Gibbons.
The Lakota Daughters (2020), a 30-minute short that Matvey edited, has played at dozens of festivals and received numerous awards. Matvey also edited, animated, and scored Calico Rebellion, a historical 'true crime' documentary about the 'Anti-Rent Wars' that took place in the Catskills, NY, in the 1840s. The film premiered at the Dances With Films festival in December 2024.
Most recently, Matvey worked on Michael Rice's feature documentary about black gay representation in modern media (post-production - 2025). In addition, Matvey has edited numerous teasers, sizzle reels and web videos. Matvey is known for his dynamic editing, layered sound work, and strong narrative sense.
